Telling a member of the LGBTQ community that you “have gay friends” does not work as a cover up for not being supportive of the community.
Example: Straight dude: Hey (place oppressive name-calling here)! How are you?
Person in LGBTQ community: Hey! I’m ok. Oh and please don’t call me (place same oppressive name-calling here). It is offensive.
Straight dude: Oh I have gay friends. It’s ok to say that!
You see where I am going. So the next time you offend someone don’t pull the “I have gay friends” card.
